Over the decades, growers have selected/bred quite a wide range. Many of the newer forms have intensely colored emergent foliage, which invariably fades to green as the season goes on. The flowers range from white, to pink and on to red. Being in the Ericaceous family, these do best with some summer watering, and where they get some afternoon shade. In driving around Seattle, you will see giant old plants, out in full sun and unattended-so these plants can take tough conditions (but may not look fabulous). Be aware that pieris are brittle; so don’t plant them in the path of errant dogs/children/balls!
