Commonly known as ‘Lungwort’ (such a lovely name!), members of this species do well in a rich, somewhat moist soil, so we have only a few selections-as the Dunn Gardens is lean and dry. Early to emerge, the foliage is often spotted or washed in white to silver markings. Bumblebees and other pollinators enjoy the flowers, and if one isn’t religious about deadheading, a few seedlings will appear. Toward the end of the first flush of flowers, we’ll cut the entire plant to the ground. Give it a good drink, and new foliage will quickly emerge. This new foliage won’t mildew, whereas if you’d left the old foliage intact, it most likely would. Keep an eye out for cutworms in early spring, as this plant is a tasty treat.
