Diphylleia cymosa (Umbrella Leaf) is native to the Southeast of the United States, growing in the Appalachian Mountains. We first saw this plant in fruit and were amazed by the deep indigo color atop a red stalk. This photograph shows the plant in flower, which one might call quiet and understated. The patch of this plant is towards the bottom of Ed's lawn, near the driveway. Slower to establish, this long lived perennial benefits from some afternoon shade and richer soil. The fruit was gathered last fall and it seems like everyone germinated. This coming fall we will plant out the seedlings elsewhere in the garden.
