Our native salal, menace and treat. While we plant it for native reclamation projects, introduced salal takes a long time to settle in. Expect a relatively high mortality rate. However, at the garden it is very happy covering large areas, providing food and cover. Near paths and the roadway, we often cut this plant back in late winter/early spring, as it responds to pruning. By pruning we keep the plants dense, since they are prone to becoming rangy.
