Lewisia cotyledon is one variety of the genus Lewisia, which grow throughout parts of western North America. L. cotyledon is native to parts of Northern California and Southern Oregon and there are many seed strains available. The one pictured here is planted behind the curator's house in our newly installed rock garden. Lewisia in general don't like a lot of winter rain on their foliage, so we have planted them where there are overhanging rocks that give some winter protection. L. cotyledon offers a wide color range in flowers, as it has been hybridized probably the most of any of the genus. This species is probably the best one for beginners to try as other species are much more demanding in habitat requirements.
