This form of Lilium martagon has been in the garden for decades. We aren't sure if it was planted in the 'teens' or 'twenties', but everyone we talk who knows the history of the garden can't remember when it wasn't here. L. martagon is native to parts of Europe and here is grows very nicely in part shade, something that most lilies won't do. We are not sure if this form is 'Mrs. R. O. Backhouse', so we bought some bulbs from a supplier and will see if the new bulbs match up to the existing plants. Occasionally the lilies are hit with a fungal disease, which causes the foliage to brown out. When it is bad we remove the plant, otherwise strip off the worst of the affected foliage.
