Aesculus parviflora
Aesculus parviflora. Photographed by James Ellingboe. Copyright 2002. All rights reserved.
Aesculus parviflora (Bottlebrush Buckeye) was planted quite a few years ago in the woodland south of Ed's house. This suckering shrub is native to the Southeast United States and has grown very nicely here. The site is quite shady and dry and yet this hasn't stopped it. Beautiful coloration to the emergent leaves in spring, nice creamy white flowers in mid to late summer and beautiful yellow foliage in the fall make this plant very welcome in the garden. This Aesculus is probably eight to ten feet in height with a wider spread. Whenever it needs a pruning, we cut down the stems in question, and the plant readily sends up new shoots. It coexists with salal and other evergreen very well, gracefully intermingling with its neighbors.
