Dryopteris erythrosora
Dryopteris erythrosora. Photographed by Michelle Margroff. Copyright 2002. All rights reserved.
Dryopteris erythrosora is an evergreen fern (up to 24" in height), native to parts of Japan and China. We love the red/bronze/copper new growth, which ages a nice dark green. This plant gets some afternoon shade and is in a fairly rich and damp spot, though it can tolerate more adverse conditions. Often after the new croziers (fronds) have started to unfurl, we will cut off the spent foliage. It is best to not be too tidy and cut off the fronds from the previous year too early, as the plant tends to grow not as vigorously.
