Podophyllum pleianthum
|
| Podophyllum pleianthum
is the Asian version of the Mayapple. In the moss garden here, we have both
the east coast variety (Podophyllum hexandrum) and this one. Of the
two P. pleianthum is our favorite. Large dramatic, glossy leaves
unfurl in mid -spring and stay beautiful looking throughout the season,
unlike the east coast variety. Strange, wonderfully bizarre flowers occur
in May, with a strange fetid odor that attracts short dogs. We have two
clones of this plant, in hopes of having them produce fruit. Again, like
Smilacina, there are plants that need several different clones present,
in order to set viable seed.
