Rhododendron calophytum
Rhododendron calophytum. Photographed by Michelle Margroff. Copyright 2002. All rights reserved.
Rhododendron calophytum has grown beautifully in Ed's garden for many years. The flowers emerge in early to mid-Spring, lasting for two to three weeks. This larger leafed plant is native to China and has become a small sized tree. It was first 'discovered' by Abbe David, a French missionary. Also in the gardens is a plant of Davidia involucrata, the 'Dove' tree named for Abbe David. For us it has been interesting to learn which person 'discovered' what plants, to think of the era and the politics and to read about the ecosystem where the plants came from. The more knowledge one can extract, the better a garden one can make.
