Rhododendron loderi 'King George'
Rhododendron loderi 'King George'. Photographed by James Ellingboe. Copyright 2002. All rights reserved.
Rhododendron loderi 'King George' is the name we have for this one. It was hybridized in 1901 and we discovered an old photograph, from the 1950's, which showed this now towering plant having been freshly planted. The flowers are wonderfully fragrant, sort of a "watermelon" candy scent. Ed sited it carefully, where it gets protection from hot afternoon sun and strong wind. This has proved to be a drawback of late, due to the fact that the new powdery mildew disease favors sites like this also. We hope that this plant will continue on for more years, but if it doesn't, we will plant a new one for future enjoyment.
