Epipactis gigantea 'Serpentine Night'
Epipactis gigantea 'Serpentine Night'. Photographed by Michelle Margroff. Copyright 2002. All rights reserved.
Epipactis gigantea 'Serpentine Night' is native to California, north of the Bay Area. This form was found not that many years ago by a plantsman who was botanizing and noticed a darker leafed form than what usually occurs. We have it planted in an area that gets sun in the morning and shade in afternoon. It is still difficult to locate in nurseries. Plant where the soil doesn't dry out too much as it resents a dry location. The flowers are quiet and not real showy as the foliage is the reason to grow this treasure. Slowly multiplying by roots (rhizomes) that creep out, we look forward to a larger patch in the years to come.
