Papaver somniferum
Papaver somniferum. Photographed by James Ellingboe. Copyright 2002. All rights reserved.
Papaver somniferum is a self-sowing annual, commonly known as the 'Opium Poppy'. These beautiful flowers only last several days each, but leave behind a seed pod, which when ripe release seeds like pepper from a pepper shaker. This plant does best when the seed is scattered in an area where there is not too much mulch (or thickly planted with perennials). This spring we scattered seed in areas that had been only lightly mulched several months prior. This poppy comes in a wide range of colors and both single and double forms. We like the single forms as they respond better to rain than the doubles, which trap water and have more of a tendency to rot.
